Fertilizer can be stored in a dry place and used up or given away.

Fertilizers that contain pesticides or herbicides: bring to Hennepin County drop-off facilities

Fertilizers that contain pesticides or herbicides should be brought to a Hennepin County drop-off facility (see guidelines below).

Dry, granular fertilizers that do not contain pesticides or herbicides: put in the garbage

Dry, granular fertilizers that do NOT contain pesticides or herbicides may be put in the garbage.

Liquid fertilizers that do not contain pesticides or herbicides: pour down drain

Liquid fertilizers (or plant food) that do NOT contain pesticides or herbicides may be poured down the sink if it goes to a sanitary sewer. Liquid fertilizers should not be poured into a septic system.

Fertilizers that contain pesticides or herbicides. Read the label: look for pre-emergent, weed preventer, plus 2, insect control and disease control. Do not put fertilizers with pesticides in the garbage.
