Midtown Greenway safety improvements project underway
On Wednesday, May 5, Hennepin County began making safety improvements on the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis. This project includes updates at the following six intersections:
- James Avenue
- Irving Avenue
- 5th Avenue
- 28th Street East
- Hiawatha Avenue (Highway 55)
- Minnehaha Avenue
Construction to improve the Midtown Greenway intersection at Humboldt Avenue will now happen in 2022 as part of Metropolitan Council's East Isles sewer improvements project. To learn more about the project, click on the link to the Metropolitan Council's project website below.
Construction process and timing
We began construction at James and Irving avenues and move east. Some intersections will be worked on at the same time. There are a total of six intersections to complete.
We anticipate construction activities at each intersection will take two to three weeks to complete, but it may vary depending on the location, work required and weather.
Access and impacts during construction
While we will maintain access on the Greenway for much of the project, there will be intersection work requiring short-term, full closures. When crews are working at Minnehaha Avenue, people will need to use local roads and paths as detours.
Similarly, we expect traffic on most of the roads to remain open. However, we will need to close 5th Avenue to complete the intersection work. People driving will need to use nearby streets.
We will provide updates prior to these closures, and detour maps will be available here. We will also have signs on-site to guide trail and vehicle traffic around the closures.
